At Stearley Heights Elementary School, there are many special programs to fit the various needs of all our students. On this page you will find a list of some of the programs we offer and a brief description. |

Counseling and Guidance Program-- Our guidance counselors provide a developmental program that is preventative in nature. The counselor works with individual and groups of students for personal growth. The counselor may be called upon to serve as a consultant to parents and teachers.

Literacy Support Specialists --SHES Literacy Support program consists of two Literacy Support Specialists and one Literacy Facilitator. The Literacy Facilitator is to provide on site support to classroom teachers in implementing research based literacy instruction and professional development.

Teacher of Learning Impaired (LI) The LI teachers provide services for those students identified as having a disorder in understanding or using spoken or written language that may manifest itself as an inability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, remember, or do mathematical calculations as defined by DoD Instruction 1342.12.

Speech Language Pathologist--The speech-language pathologist (SLP) works with students who have speech, language, fluency and voice disorders. Speech-language therapy is considered a related service in special education and may be required for a student to benefit from his or her special education program. The speech-language pathologist often works as part of a team, which may include teachers, psychologists, occupational therapists and others. A student is eligible for speech services following assessments and qualification under DoDDS eligibility criteria. The individual needs of the student are important considerations when developing goals and objectives.

English as a Second Language (ESL)--SHES ESL program's main goal is to develop students’ English language ability as quickly as possible so that their academic ability compares with that of their native English speaking peers. The program serves both students who are beginning to lean English as well as those that have already developed a good command of spoken English but are still below grade level in reading and writing.

School Nurse--The school nurse works with educational and medical agencies to help plan, organize, implement, and evaluate the school health services. First aid is provided to ill and injured students and school personnel.

Psychologist--The psychologist administers psychological batteries, consults with staff members, and plans and manages a program of psychological services.

Gifted Education Program--The Gifted Education Program serves those students with above average ability, creativity, and task commitment in their classroom

| Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES)--The FLES program is in its pilot year here at Stearley Heights ES. This program focuses on the instruction of Spanish to students in kindergarten and first grade. Students receive 90 minutes of instruction each week. The goal is for students to attain a "novice" proficiency level in a foreign language.
